C-1850 Adam Caire Poughkeepsie, NY #3 Blue Decorated Crock, Double-Handled, From the Private Collection of Judge James Brands. Pickup Only, Rhinebeck, NY

Judge Brands hand-picked this 19th century beauty from his chambers in the Supreme Court building in Poughkeepsie, NY. Circa 1850s, this double handled crock measures 10.25" high x 11.5" diameter and is salt-glazed stoneware decorated in cobalt blue having a beautiful motif. (Judge Brands donated crocks to the DCHS In 2021, 2022, 2023 & 2024 they all sold to benefit the DCHS!)

This year's example made by Adam Caire is the earliest donated so far, made between 1852 and 1856. Riedinger & Caire Pottery was first developed by John Caire when he bought Poughkeepsie Pottery in 1839. Adam Caire entered his father's business in 1852. After selling the business and then buying it back in 1856, Caire became a partner to Philip Riedinger. The company manufactured stoneware, earthenware, firebricks, flower pots, jugs and bottles. One popular customer included Matthew Vassar's brewery! The partners later developed sewer pipes which were used at the Capitol in Albany and at the Hudson River State Hospital in Poughkeepsie.

In the past, Judge Brands hand picked all of his 19th century beauties from his chambers in the Supreme Court building in Poughkeepsie and hand carried it to the delivery service for the auction as seen in these images from past DCHS auctions.

Lane Brothers Swift Mill #15 ca. 1875 Coffee Grinder. Pickup Only, Rhinebeck, NY

Lane Brothers is famous for their coffee grinders. This one is a larger size, measuring 20" Tall x 11" Wide plus 3" handle. Item in very good condition. Original box has been replaced by contemporary wooden box.

Beriah Swift invented and produced coffee grinders in the 1840s out of the Town of Washington in Dutchess County. His cousins, the Lane Brothers, greatly expanded the business and relocated to Poughkeepsie in 1882. The Lane brothers made many cast iron items, including boilers, and in 1901 they launched production of a steam-driven automobile.

DCHS is fortunate to have in its collections a near perfect Lane Brothers "Swift Mill" similar to this. For clarity, when DCHS accepts a collections item it is in perpetuity so we would never sell a collections item. Since DCHS already has a good example of the mill, we have allowed the donor to contribute this item to the auction.
