Lyndhurst is situated on land which was originally hunting grounds of the indigenous Lenape/Munsee tribes. By the 18th century it was cleared by early Europeans for farmland. Considered one of America’s finest Gothic Revival mansions, Lyndhurst Mansion was designed by Alexander Jackson Davis (1803-1892) in 1838 for William Paulding Jr.

Second owner George Merritt rehired original architect Davis to double the mansion in size between 1864-1867, to the house visitors see today. Wall Street tycoon Jay Gould purchased Lyndhurst in 1880 as a seasonal residence. Gould redesigned some of the interior décor by commissioning furniture from the Herter Brothers, windows from Louis Comfort Tiffany, and paintings from the Knoedler Gallery.

Over time these families made Lyndhurst their home, shaping the mansion to their tastes. Your many visits to Lyndhurst through your Dual Membership will reveal their influence and their stories its architectural beauty, park-like landscape, broad collection of original decorative arts and rich furnishings. https://lyndhurst.org/
